Death Behind 'Fart' Earth Triggers Giant Siberian Crater

Every day, people are dealing with methane, one of the main ingredients of something that is often considered rude: fart.

Perhaps, that is why methane is also referred to as 'natural gas'. However, unfortunately, we are not only caused by the accumulation of wind exhaust gas in the stomach. Earth itself was 'fart'.

More recently, three new giant crater - which one of them has a width of 100 feet or 30.48 meters and a depth of 200 feet or 60.96 meters - found in frozen ground (permafrost) Siberia. Experts sent to investigate the location to find what exactly that form the giant hole.

Since the video was uploaded onto the internet crater and spread, virtual world filled with rumors and speculation. Some suspect the hole homemade UFO, a secret door to the depths of the Earth. Or some people thought it was a weapons test site or a meteorite impact scars.

Apparently, the explanation for this phenomenon is more worrisome than the asteroid attack from outer space: allegedly, after two consecutive summers, with an average temperature of 5 degrees Celsius warmer than normal, frozen methane was there not only melted, but exploded !

Scientists are anxious not to play, just in case as well as due to chronic poor digestion, this phenomenon can be sustained. Methane in the air around this crater has been measured 53,000 times the normal concentration.

Then, in just over a week, a team from Stockholm University found 'extensive methane bubble' that was brought up from Siberian seabed waters. Column of gas bubbles that rise to the surface around the scientists icebreaker in waters saturated, with 10 to 50 times more methane content than usual.

What happens at sea is equivalent to the permafrost melts, the destruction of frozen crystals called methane hydrates (methane hydrates) - were locked thousands of years by the pressure and temperature in the ocean.

United States Agency for Marine Research or US calculates the Office of Naval Research, containing trillions of tons of methane hydrate hidrokrabon, from 2 to 10 times the amount of conventional fossil fuel deposits, but too dangerous to mining it. Now, when sea temperatures rise, they began to collapse, spewing gas into the sky as much as possible, while the tundra is melting as a result.

Methane released in the air to produce 86 times the greenhouse effect of carbon dioxide traps heat. Although CO2 remains in the atmosphere much longer, after 100 years, methane is 30 times more powerful. With the increase in sea level of 3-6 feet were already predicted to occur by the end of this century, the Earth, the 'bloated' could destroy human civilization.

So, what can we do

Alan Weisman, author of leading books themed environments, one of which is 'The World Without Us' opinion, there are 3 things that absolutely must be done.

First, is to identify the causes of the phenomenon. That the rise in temperature, which warms the land, and the oceans are releasing more methane - which will warm the other things later - a very dangerous speed up the eruption. Warming causing more warming.

"Secondly, we must recognize that we are the one, man, who started this vicious circle. Linkage between the fuel that drives rapid progress of the industry, excess CO2 and methane in the atmosphere, are those who reap the benefits of that horrible," he said, in the opinion loaded CNN, August 12, 2014.

Third, people should stop pretending to say that the energy that comes by way of destroying the Earth as an energy bedrock 'clean'.

Burning methane is not only risky, but potentially leaky wells are fractured. At least 2% of the output of methane seeping into the atmosphere, more and make a thick layer of gas that has changed the Earth into a tremendous heat. In other words, according to Weisman, the methane is not the right choice to replace fossil fuels.

Focus man, he said, should be directed to energy options really clean, like wind and solar.

The last time there was a lot of CO2 in the atmosphere is 3 million years ago, when the sea is 80 to 100 feet higher. Since the Industrial Revolution, atmospheric methane is more than doubled, and the number is now out of the sea just 34 times more - than what allegedly happened seven years ago.

"Until we stop putting more carbon dioxide and methane in the sky, preparing to face 'fart' is more coarse and foul that could affect the future of mankind. Then coastal cities, and many fertile delta of rice plants in the world are threatened by flooding or salination of sea overflowed. And with harvest of wheat is expected to drop by 10% for each additional 1 degree Celsius of average temperature - goes beyond the level of greenhouse gases not only vulgar - but deadly. "

The same thing is also revealed in the journal Nature recently. "The air near the bottom of the crater contains a very high concentration of methane - up 9.6% - in tests conducted at the site on July 16," 2014, said Andrei Plekhanov, archaeologists from the Scientific Centre of Arctic Studies in Salekhard, Russia . Plekhanov, who led the expedition to the crater, said that the air usually contains only 0.000179% methane.
