United States President Barack Obama said he had approved the air strikes were directed against Islamic militants or ISIS Daulah Islamiyah in northern Iraq, if they threaten the interests of the United States.

United States has been bringing food and water by air to Iraq under threat of fighters from Daulah Islamiyah.

It won Qaraqosh city, the largest Christian town in Iraq as a result of citizens to make an exodus to save themselves.

Supplies of food given to members of minority Yazidis of Sinjar regions, said one American official.

Many Yazidis have fled their homes and take refuge in some nearby mountains.

The Security Council of the United Nations met to discuss the situation in Iraq.

"The members of the UN Security Council called on the international community to support the government and people of Iraq and to do as much as possible to help alleviate the suffering of people affected by the conflict in Iraq," said Britain's UN Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant.

Meanwhile, the United States warned the situation for minorities in Iraq may be a "humanitarian catastrophe".

The United States also will send humanitarian aid such as food and medicine to people in northern Iraq by air.
