The UN will mediate disputes China-Vietnam

Both countries were observed near the Paracel Islands

The United Nations says willing to mediate a territorial dispute between China and Vietnam.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, called on both parties to resolve disputes peacefully and under applicable laws.

Last week, Vietnam and China have sent a document containing their claims in the South China Sea to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

Latest phase of the dispute centered on China's decision to move a drilling rig Click Paracel Islands which became a bone of contention between the two countries.

South China Sea become a source of various territorial claims by several countries.

Beijing claims almost the entire sea, based on maps from the mid 20th century with the dotted line which confirms the territorial boundaries of China and the claims history of 1,000 years ago.

While Vietnam say they've mastered the Paracel Islands for centuries.

On Tuesday (10/06), China submitted to the United Nations documents on the country's historical claims in the region and accused Vietnam of illegally interfere Chinese exploration there.

Vietnam hit back with a counter document and asked Beijing to stop oil drilling in the Paracel and negotiate.
